Graph and Connect Coordinate Points

You can plot points one at a time, or you can plot multiple at once using lists or a table.

Plot and Connect Points in the Graphing Calculator

Plot Points

To plot a point, enter the values as a coordinate pair in the form \((x,y).\)

You can add multiple points to a single expression line by separating each coordinate point with a comma.

You can also plot points using a table.

Click Add Item and then select Table. Or, type table into an expression line.

Point Options Menu

Click and hold the Color icon to open a point’s Options menu Color Options icon.

There, you can show or hide the point, show or hide the label, make your point draggable, and adjust the opacity, width, style, font size, position, and angle of the label.

Point Discontinuity

The graphing tools do not automatically graph points of discontinuity. You can, however, use a table to help determine where a point of discontinuity is.

Once you have identified a point of discontinuity, you can plot it in a separate expression line and change the point from a closed circle to an open circle.

To do so, click and hold the Color icon to open the Options menu. Then, select the Open Circle Open Circle icon to plot the point of discontinuity.

Connect Points

When you create a table, you can connect the points by clicking and holding the dependent variable’s Color icon. Choose from three different styles of lines.

The polygon function can connect points using a table or list of coordinates.

In the example, a table contains the vertices of the polygon. In another expression line, the polygon function uses the table headers \(x_{1},y_{1}\) as the two arguments needed to graph the polygon.

If you add multiple points to a single expression line, you can connect the points from the Options menu.

Plot and Connect Points in the Geometry Tool

The Geometry Tool provides many options for plotting and connecting points.

Plot Points

Select the Point tool Point tool icon from the toolbar. Then. click the location on the graph paper where you want your point.

To change the color or add a label, select a point and then choose More from the toolbar.

Connect Points

You can connect points using the Polygon Polygon tool icon or Segment Segment tool icon tool.

Plot and Connect Points in 3D

Plot a point using coordinates in the form \((x, y, z)\).

Press and hold the Color icon in the expression line to open the Options menu, where you can change the size and color of the point.

Similar to the Graphing Calculator, you can plot points individually, in the same expression line separated by commas, or with variables defined by tables, sliders, or lists.

If you use a table, you will need to reference the table variables in a separate expression line to see the points from the table plotted in the cube.

The triangle function allows you to graph a triangle with three points, like with the expression triangle\(\mathbf{((2,-1,0),(2,2,0),(0,0,2))}\).
